This large spherical vessel carved from a coconut shell is decorated in low relief with two broad circular medallions showing one or more bearded scholars seated in an interior crowded with books, flasks, alembics and other instruments suggestive of an alchemist’s laboratory, set against a latticed ground and framed by a beaded border. The nut is set into a solid silver mount composed of a tall circular foot with three scrolling supports, two sinuous handles attached by silver coins, and an elongated neck surmounted by a female bust whose flowing hair extends into organic scrolls. One worn coin clearly bears the date “1827”, which provides a secure terminus post quem for the mounting, while the shell shows an even brown patina, indicating a display rather than utilitarian function. The ensemble weighs about 1.50 lb (approximately 681 g), with an overall height of about 13.4 in (34 cm), a base diameter of roughly 6.3 in (16 cm), and a maximum shell diameter close to 5.2 in (approximately 13.1 cm). By its historicist symbolism — coiffed female bust and ribbon like handles re using silver coins — the mount can be linked to a European workshop active in the second half of the 19th century, when mounted exotic shells and occult sciences fostered a marked taste for symbolic curiosities. Within this limited corpus, this large “alchemy pot”, acquired around the 2010s at the Saint Ouen flea market in Paris, stands out as a rare and singular interpretation of the coconut cup tradition, conceived as a collector’s curiosity.

This antique inkwell consists of a solid silver cover forming four distinct receptacles, mounted on a large half coconut shell resting on a small circular solid silver foot, the ensemble presenting a compact, slightly flaring profile in which the vegetal texture of the nut contrasts with the smooth, engraved surface of the silver. The shell is deeply carved in relief against a dense foliate ground articulated by oval medallions, each containing a stylised bust probably of Voltaire, framed by beading and scrolls that organise the decoration into continuous registers, while the silver mount, with gadrooned rim and four tiered domed lids, develops a vocabulary of “Chinese” motifs combining scrollwork and geometric interlace, indicating a desk accessory intended to hold ink, pounce and possibly sealing wax. The visible condition is good, with a dark patina on the shell, minor wear to the reliefs and initial oxidation of the silver. Weighing about 6.3 oz (around 180 g), this inkwell may be attributed, on stylistic grounds, to a late nineteenth century European workshop, probably French, combining chinoiserie silverwork with a coconut shell carved with portraits of Voltaire, emblematic figure of the Enlightenment; it was purchased on a French classified ad website (leboncoin) in 2013.

This openwork pot is carved from a large coconut shell and mounted on a solid silver circular base with four bun feet, the broadly spherical body being widely opened at the top by irregular vertical windows cut between large overlapping palm leaves whose finely incised veins create a dense, rhythmic pattern. The lower register of the nut, polished and undecorated, contrasts with the matte texture of the carving, while the silver mount, edged with an elongated egg-and-dart frieze, provides stability and gives the ensemble the appearance of a small standing bowl or candleholder, with no visible inscriptions and a satisfactory condition characterised by an even dark patina, slight wear along the pierced edges and the first traces of oxidation on the base. Weighing about 8.2 oz (around 232 g) and measuring close to 6.3 in in overall height (about 16 cm), with a maximum shell diameter of roughly 5.5 in (about 14 cm) and an opening of around 3.9 in (about 10 cm), the piece can be attributed, on the evidence of the French Minerva hallmark and the naturalistic foliate repertoire, to a French workshop of the late nineteenth or very early twentieth century, probably in Dieppe. The combination of a precious metal mount and stylised palm fronds alludes both to an exotic imaginary and to the economic importance of palm trees in colonial trade. This example was acquired in 2007 via a French online second-hand marketplace (Leboncoin).

Pesant environ 232 g (environ 8.2 oz) pour une hauteur totale proche de 16 cm (environ 6.3 in), un diamètre maximal de la noix d’environ 14 cm (environ 5.5 in) et une ouverture de l’ordre de 10 cm (environ 3.9 in), cette pièce peut être attribuée, sur la base du poinçon français Minerve et du répertoire feuillu naturaliste, à un atelier hexagonal de la fin du XIXe ou du tout début du XXe siècle, probablement dieppois. La combinaison d’une monture précieuse et d’un décor de palmes stylisées renvoie à la fois à l’imaginaire exotique et au rôle économique des palmiers dans le commerce colonial. Cet exemplaire a été acquis en 2007 sur un site web français de vente d’objets d’occasion (Leboncoin).

Large vial composed of a deeply carved coconut shell held between two elements of solid silver, forming a slightly flattened foot, a broad ovoid body and a tiered neck surmounted by a pointed cap that serves as a stopper; all silver mounts, including base, shoulder, neck and finial, are entirely covered with a dense décor of scrolling foliage and stylized floral motifs executed in fine engraving, while the dark coconut shell displays an analogous repertoire of arabesques carved in low relief and enhanced by a dark patina, creating a continuous ornamental register that unifies the organic material and the metal mount. The condition is excellent despite slight surface wear and a few traces of oxidation consistent with age and use. Weighing about 13.1 oz (around 370 g), the piece measures approximately 9.8 in (about 25 cm) in overall height and about 3.7 in (about 9.5 cm) at its maximum diameter. Purchased in the Sultanate of Oman in 2009 during a scientific mission.

Anglais (English). This small jug combines a carved coconut shell body in high relief with solid silver mounts bearing the Minerva hallmark, forming a smooth slightly flaring neck, annular foot and scroll handle, while the spout is embellished with a symbol that recalls a female arm holding an anchor in the manner of maritime emblems. The dark shell is organized into three oval medallions framed by ropework and palm fronds, each panel developing a narrative scene that shows, on different sides, a sailor departing or returning, his waiting wife, and various details of cabins, shoreline and naval accessories, the remaining surface being filled with a very dense vegetal and symbolic décor that lends the whole a pictorial character. The condition is good, with surface wear and polishing to the silver consistent with age. The piece weighs about 7.76 oz (around 220 g), stands approximately 5.9 in high (about 15 cm), measures roughly 5.9 in across with the handle (about 15 cm) and 3.7 in in maximum diameter (about 9.5 cm). It is most likely a French production of the second half of the nineteenth century, conceived as a sentimental keepsake for a sailor’s household, acquired online in 2005 together with a matching powder flask by the same carver and bearing the same inscription “on the sea I think of you.”

Il s’agit vraisemblablement d’une production française de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, réalisée comme souvenir sentimental pour un foyer de marin. Cette cruche a été achetée sur internet en 2005 dans un lot qui comprenait une poire à poudre assortie, du même sculpteur et portant la même inscription « sur la mer je pense à toi ».

These two small decorative coffee pots each consist of a deeply carved spherical coconut shell held between several solid silver elements forming a narrow annular foot, a slender neck, an elongated channel‑shaped spout and a domed lid topped by a fine finial; the mounts, including base, neck, articulated spout and broad curved handle, remain largely plain and thus emphasize the characteristic silhouette of the Omani dallah. The dark shell carries a continuous register of palm trees, animals and human figures in low relief with a brown‑black patina that enhances the modelling, while the overall condition is very good, with slight surface wear and localized tarnish. The underside of one piece bears the punch “SILVER 925”, indicating modern sterling manufacture, probably in the 20th century. In the absence of measurements, relative scale and morphology link these miniatures to traditional Omani silver coffee pots used to serve qahwa, here reduced to an ornamental format likely intended for Salalah’s high‑end tourist market, where silverwork is a common luxury souvenir. The combination of a dallah‑type mount with a carved coconut shell remains uncommon, and the pair is acquired in Salalah in the Sultanate of Oman in 2009 during a scientific mission.

L’association d’une monture de dallah avec une coque de noix de coco sculptée demeure peu fréquente. Acheté à Salalah dans le sultanat d’Oman en 2009 lors d’une mission scientifique.

This cup is formed from a hollowed half coconut, deeply carved in high relief to create a slightly flaring bowl whose rim is pierced with a continuous frieze of stylised flowers and small bosses. The main decoration consists of five oval medallions, each containing a profile head framed by palm wreaths and separated by bundles of chevron-like leaves. The base is a cast solid-silver mount made up of a fluted collar resting on a domed, stepped, roughly square plinth with four small feet, one side bearing a partially worn Minerva hallmark. Overall height 5.5 in (about 14 cm), mouth diameter 3.5 in (about 9 cm), and total weight about 5.0 oz (142 g). The piece belongs to the 19th century tradition of mounted coconut cups and was probably produced in a French workshop working in a historicising taste inspired by earlier cabinets of curiosities.
